His positions have included IDRC Program Officer for Health and Development in West and Central Africa and head of the Ford Foundation’s offices in Senegal and Nigeria from 1993 to 2001. He serves as a director on boards of several nonprofit organizations, including Oxfam America, the Crime Prevention Centre of South Africa, the Soros Foundation’s AfriMAP initiative, and the Global Network Committee of the Ash Institute at Harvard University. He also chairs the executive committee of the Africa Grantmakers’ Affinity Group. Dr. Aidoo has taught at universities in Ghana, Tanzania, and the United States. He was educated in Ghana and the United States and received a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Connecticut in 1984. He writes poetry and short stories in his spare time. UK charities have a key role in helping Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals – and it doesn’t just lie in programme delivery, says Dr Akwasi Aidoo.
 It is 2011 and we are 11 years into the 15-year journey towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The final destination is impressive: a world without extreme poverty and hunger, and where universal primary education, gender equality, child survival and good maternal health, among other things, are the norm.These goals are ambitious but not utopian and when Africa achieves them, the centuries-old suffering and indignities that have afflicted its people would end. Can we accomplish this in the next five years? It is unlikely, but in our lifetime, yes. Currently, Africa is not on track. As the Sudanese economist, Dr Wani Tombe Lako, put it: "At the current pace, it is unrealistic for African countries to imagine that they could achieve the MDG even in 100 years." Rather than being halved, the levels of poverty and hunger in Africa could easily double by 2015, and Africa is still an ocean of gender inequality. What would it take to get Africa on track? Akwasi Aidoo, TrustAfrica “I think European foundations can do more, and that’s my call — that they should take centre stage globally.”  The key point about this Foundation Week and the EFC conference is that they truly represent a crossing of borders. Europe has a long tradition of crossing borders – sometimes not in a good way – and Europe itself has been knocking down its own borders. I believe there is a need for European philanthropy to stress that tradition and to live it and to go global. I see this week’s event as a very important step towards that. The philanthropic community is reaching out to the bilateral and multilateral institutions, and totheBrusselsinstitutions.Withpeople from all over the world here, it’s more than a European event and that’s a very striking thing.Continue reading "Reflections on European Foundation Week" |
